Dan’s Silver Leaf

http://www.myspace.com/danssilverleaf

So, I had to shoot photos and chose to go to Dan’s Silver Leaf here in Denton.  As people in the area know, Dan’s is a place to go for a great performance.  It has been mentioned in the New York times http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/05/11/travel/11cultured.html?scp=3&sq=dan’s%20silver%20leaf&st=cse# so I will not repeat all that is said.  The stage is home to up and coming bands and singers, as well as well known acts.  It is not a large place, but God does the music get you going!  This year was the first year for North by 35, NX35 and Dan’s was one of the venues for the music.  The photos posted are of the band, Hatch.  They are based in Denton and as far as lableing the type of music.  I have to ask them.  It is, kind of alive.  That’s how I best know how to describe it.

Texas Storytelling Festival

www.tejasstorytelling.com

The woman  in the glasses with the guitar is a National Teller from Madison County, North Carolina.  Her family traditionally passes down, English, Scottish and Irish ballads.  She is a seventh generation story teller and the acompanying ballads added to her performance.  Her work is featured in several documentary films, news and magazine articles.   The young girl on stage, Bree Huschke, 7-years-old, told a story of wanting to be a pirate, but at the end, when she had joined the pirates, she realizes she has no one to tuck her in or hold her when she is scared.  She decides that she would rather be a princes and removes the bandana and places a tiera on her head at the end of her story.  The photograph where Gordon shows Eldrena (who is a Native American teller) a “magic ring” is taken in a room by the Stages.     The woman in orange is Toni Simmons from Dallas.  She told a story about a woman’s experience with slavery.  Although I was taking photos, I did listen to most of the story. One line that stood out was about a moment when the woman had run away with her children, and a new born baby.  She realized that slaver owners had found her and before they caught her, she decided to slit her childs thoat.  And people asked, “What kind of a woman is this?”  But, “What kind of thing is Slavery, that this woman would rather kill her children than submit them to it?” was the real question that they should ask, pointed out Toni.  After she was caught, the woman was charged not with murder, but “DESTRUCTION of Property.”

TWU International Dance Company and Fiesta on the Square

Claudia Vera was dancing a duet for Fiesta on the Square when she twisted her ankle. Improvising, she danced on, hoping not to disappoint her audience. But coming off the stage, she felt sad. Then, as she was leaving her dressing room, a girl of about 8 ran up to Claudia. “I just wanted to give you a balloon because you danced so beautiful,” said the girl. Every year, says Claudia, there is a moment like that when the International Dance Company performs for the fiesta, which celebrates the independence of Latin countries to the south. “She meant so much to me,” she says, “because I thought I had messed up.  And this little girl probably wanted the balloon, but then she wanted to give it to me.”

…………………………THIS IS THE INTRO……………..  I have to add the rest or link to the mag when it is published.

Fiesta on the Square in Denton or later on, Fiestas Patrias is in September and usually around the 16th…  I wrote a story that will be in Denton Live. I interviewed the women from Texas Women’s University and took photos in their dance studio.  Claudia is the one in the white dress.

Corky and Mark Stuckenbruck

“Corky Stuckenbruck teaches design fundamentals and fibers courses and has been a member of the faculty since 1975.”    http://www.twu.edu/as/va/faculty/facultymemberpages/Stuckenbruck/stuckenbruck.html

I went to Corky and Mark’s house to take photos for Denton Live, the fall edition for 2009.  I spent not too long at their house and did not write the story for the magazine.  I did however find out that the couple met when Mark arrived to teach at Texas Women’s University.   Art is hung on every wall it seemed.  Beautiful and the atmosphere in their house lent to an enjoyable experience.  While they stood by a piece, which Mark said was a self portrait, he talked about Obama and asked Corky if she thought Obama should give money to Art students and they both agreeded.  I belive Mark had just cleared the studio because he had been showing his work for the past month.  The photo where the hearts with a ladder and a house with a ladder show their work together, I asked if they had ever displayed it together….Corky said, no, they showed the pieces the same day, but on different floors, which is interesting, because Mark said something about the ladder connecting to the heart’s ladder and she said, “That is why I put the ladder their.”

Mexico City: My spring break

Palacio de Bellas Artes

Palacio de Bellas Artes

Before I left Texas, people kept telling me to be careful, as they knew I would be in Mexico City soon.  For the first time in years, I did worry a little, because of the news about violence, especially in Reynosa.  It is the same as always though.  I go for a 4 or 6 mile run and enjoy my family, the sites and the food.  My family thinks it is interesting when I told them that lately news programs and articles mention how dangerous it is in Mexico and advising American’s not to come for spring break.  This is spring break for me, but I am spending time in the City, not at the beach.   Wednesday I spend the day at “el Zocalo” taking photos and “el Palacio de Bellas Artes.”  My 19 year old cousin was my guide.   She is wonderful…  I will post pictures in a few days.    My aunt mentioned Obama being here, but too bad, that is a month from now.

Below are a few more added later.  I thought it was interesting that they had the flag inside the church…  It is common, I usually dont even think about it twice, but in the U.S. some people are so oppossed to mixing church and state.  The photos of the man, I took from across the street.  I just saw him waiting and someone finally went up to buy chips whith Chile.  The boy, well, he was outside of a beautiful post office.  He was writing on a letter, I used a wide angle lens so that it did not seem like I was getting him in the photo, his parents were sitting off to the right and were already kind of looking at me.
