The home page for The Halifax Explosion, http://www.cbc.ca/halifaxexplosion/index.html has some great graphics on the top corner, but I have to say, right away my eye is drawn to the section with red words that says “What’s New?” I really think that should be at the bottom, to begin with, since that isn’t the main story.
Love the intro, how it draws you into the history and sets up the story. Very intense. The writer makes sure you understand the connection between the city and the harbor, as if they were two people.
Great that it includes the “Ask a Librarian” link, and info on the “Did you know?” plus the side that help teachers, I guess, if they want to use this to teach.
The section titled Countdown to Catastrophe starts off with:
The voyage that would wreck a city began earlier that week in New York.
…… It’s a great line to start with.
I used to be in the Navy, I do like how they use the terminology and then have a question mark to explain, without adding the explanation to the piece, so as to keep the flow going.
I don’t know why, but I could not view the Media Gallery. I tried several clips, I’m not sure if I don’t have a program I need, but I can usually watch stuff that I want, it is just slow sometimes.
The explosion. That section was incredible. It described the scene and gave numbers to show how many people lost their lives. It helps a reader understand something, but of course, I have no idea how it must have been to anyone that survived, truly feel it. It is such an ugly, horrible thing that happened there.
The feature interactive section is good, again though; I tried to listen to the clip of Thomas Raddal, but could not. I do like that there are excerpts of his novel.
The pictures in between pages are good, because it is only really the picture that you view, text is not completely surrounding it and it allows for a larger picture.
The section that briefly mentions the Titanic and bodies that washed ashore to Halifax helps put things into some sort of perspective when talking about the city and the shock they were in.

The Churchill Interactive Speech is a great site for the speech; I had never heard it before. But is seems as though there is something missing in the layout. I don’t know what it is. I like that you may choose several points in the speech though the highlight tab. The fact that you can click on the timeline and the pictures open up a dialog box IS VERY INTERESTING. I guess that it took me a while to realize that it was something that I could do. I thought that it was just something to show while I listened and read along with the speech. If I would try to do something like this, I would definitely indicate on the side that the viewer has that option. I found it very interesting to read some of the side notes on the pictures of the speech. The scribbles and notes on the speech make time seem relative because it gives it a sense of present being somehow.

The “I want Luis Back” story was very emotional. I guess I was interested in seeing how they took this story and shot video of it. It seems as though it would be something that I would find hard to do, because the situation.
I guess that the mother or father did not want to talk? The aunt talking openly saying she will not forgive the person who did it was a strong point. She was not hiding anything but flat out said what she thought. The video shot of the school, I guess is meant to show his age, but what exactly does that do, instead of maybe showing his room or something more personal? I sort of would have liked to know a little more about him, but I guess it could me that they didn’t have enough time.
I did find it a little odd at first that the first person they interviewed was his baby sister. I wasn’t sure I would let her talk if she was my child, but I suppose it makes it more emotional that way.
